Green Strategy

With our coffees we want to be as sustainable as possible. Our coffee is sourced from sustainable sources, whilst ensuring a fair price for the farmers and we have sourced compostable and biodegradable packaging.

Following in depth research, we have carefully chosen the companies we work with to ensure that our processes result in no unnecessary wastage, be it our barrels or raw material deliveries. We are constantly striving to find and develop our green strategy further. We will be sure to update you on our progress through both our journal and here, on our “green strategy” page. Here at Cofaidh Ceilidh, we aim to be as sustainable as we possibly can in both our business and in our personal lives. We are aware that coffee roasting is a contributor of greenhouse gasses and are therefore doing our utmost to reduce the carbon footprint that we leave on the planet of which we are currently custodians. As individuals we always recycle, look for better consumer choices (e.g. our Cofaidh Ceilidh apparel is made from organic cotton), use renewable resource suppliers for electricity and gas and want our company to be the same.

Starting with the coffee, we have sourced beans that are produced in a sustainable way through the Asociación Aldea Global Jinotega, which began as a project with 22 small producers in 1992. The experience was motivated by the need to promote organic production, friendly to the environment, change the culture of the use of agrochemicals, improve health in families and promote its development. You can read more about the organisation here.

Next in our process is the barrels. These are taken from the end of the Whisky process and will have soaked up the flavours and essence from the escaping angel's share. The barrels are taken from the Whisky industry and we give them a new lease of life in another beverage product, before being sold on to be upcycled as furniture, garden pots etc.

Next in the order of our coffee production is the roasting and grinding, this is where we are looking to make the biggest improvements. Currently we are reviewing the opportunity to use a utilities provider that provides renewable resources for gas and electricity. Additionally, one of the bi products of the roasting process is the coffee bean husks which we are looking to see if we can pass on to local allotments to use as fertiliser.

The packaging used by Cofaidh Ceilidh is plasticfree. The pouches we use to hold the grounds and beans are made from renewable materials. They are made from Kraft Paper / Cellulose Film / Starch Film, fully compostable (including zip lock) and 100% biodegradable in 66 days. The boxes used are made from 60-90% recycled materials and all at Cofaidh Ceilidh urge you to recycle these once you no-longer need them. Furthermore, all boxes are vegan friendly. Finally, the branded tape that seals the box ahead of shipping, is made from reinforced Kraft paper to provide optimal security for your shipments. The gummed tape can also be recycled the same as your cardboard. Cofaidh Ceilidh chose to use this as it removes the faff of taking the plastic sticky tape off the package and can just be thrown in the recycling bin still attached.

The most recent update for our Green Strategy was announced at the beginning of March 2021. We have purchased a “grove” in the Trees for Life rewilding of Dundreggan in the Scottish Highlands. This will allow us to continue our journey to being a carbon negative company through tree planting in our Cofaidh Ceilidh grove.

This is by no means the end of our attempts to be a sustainable business and we will continue to strive for the good of both the present and future citizens of our planet Earth.
